The short explanation
SIR means Special Intensive Revision; SSR means Special Summary Revision. ECI’s revision FAQ distinguishes intensive, summary, and partly intensive/partly summary revision. It describes SSR as summary revision with special features, including intensive pre-revision activities.
House-to-house verification therefore does not, by itself, identify an exercise as SIR. ECI’s SSR description also includes that activity.
Compare the documents, not only the acronyms
For a worked example, follow how Bihar’s document and claims rules changed in 2025.
| Read this | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The order and geographical scope | Identify the exercise and the state or constituencies it covers. Do not transfer one state’s instructions to another. |
| Qualifying and publication dates | Eligibility reference dates, application windows and publication dates answer different questions. |
| Enumeration and documentation instructions | Use the instructions applicable to that exercise and any subsequent official changes. |
| Draft, claims/objections and final publication | These are stages, not interchangeable lists or outcome measures. |
| Later orders and supplements | An earlier timetable or document checklist may have been modified. |
How ECI describes SSR
The FAQ separates pre-revision work from revision itself. It describes draft publication, claims and objections, processing of additions/deletions/corrections, and final publication. That procedural description is not evidence that every individual case was correctly handled.
